Reincarnation Facts and Resources

What is Reincarnation?

Reincarnation is the concept that souls are continuously reborn in different bodies at different times and places. Many belief systems around the world embrace reincarnation, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism, and a variety of New Age religions. Each religion professes different beliefs about the cause and purpose of reincarnation, but some facts remain consistent. In most every case, reincarnation is a natural and very important part of the development of a soul; it is the process of struggling against some negative force, such as desire or karma, toward a higher state of being; and it applies to all human beings, if not all living creatures.

What do metempsychosis, the cycle of rebirth, and transmigration of the soul mean? Where do they come from?

Metempsychosis, also known as the transmigration of the soul, is a concept from ancient Greek philosophy. It refers to the journey of the soul from one incarnation (fleshly host) to the next. The soul is released from the body by death and exists briefly in a pure spiritual state before returning to a new body. The cycle of rebirth refers to the continuous process of transmigration and rebirth that attends the history of every soul. Plato is considered the “father” of these beliefs in Western thought; however, they are prominent in many Eastern religious systems.

Is there any evidence of reincarnation?

Reincarnation, like anything that takes place after death, is very difficult to study. The evidence of reincarnation comes from the study of incidents where people seem to remember places or people from a distant past. There is also déjà vu and the phenomenon of “old souls” – that is, people (including children) who conduct themselves with an aura of wisdom far beyond their years. Past-life regression therapy, including hypnosis and other methods, has purportedly been used to uncover memories and hidden psychological dynamics related to past lives. Purely scientific evidence is more scant. Some believers point to the laws of thermodynamics, which state that energy – perhaps even the energies of which a soul is made – can neither be created or destroyed, but must remain constant. Understood this way, the idea may support reincarnation.

How many people believe in reincarnation?

It is impossible to know precisely, but millions of people worldwide identify themselves with belief systems in which reincarnation plays a part. This includes over 300 million Buddhists, 800 million Hindus, at least one million adherents of New Age religions, and several million others, as well as many whose beliefs are held privately. Overall, it is reasonable to estimate that about a quarter of the world’s population believes in reincarnation in some form.

The Afterlife Investigations – Movie Feature

Breakthrough scientific evidence for the afterlife. The Scole Experiments. For five years a group of mediums and scientists witnessed more phenomena than in any other experiment in the history of the paranormal, including recorded conversations with the dead, written messages on sealed film, video of spirit faces and even spirit forms materializing. These experiments may finally convince you there is life after death.

Does Consciousness Depend on the Brain?

In this materialistic age, dualists are often accused of smuggling outmoded religious beliefs back into science, of introducing superfluous spiritual forces into biology, and of venerating an invisible “ghost in the machine.” However, our utter ignorance concerning the real origins of human consciousness marks such criticism more a matter of taste than of logical thinking. At this stage of mind science, dualism is not irrational, merely somewhat unfashionable. – Physicist Nick Herbert, Elemental Mind.

In March 1987 Dawn Gillott was admitted to Northampton General Hospital, seriously ill with pneumonia. After being placed in intensive care, the physicians decided to perform a tracheotomy because she could not breathe.

The next thing I was above myself near the ceiling looking down. One of the nurses was saying in what seemed a frantic voice, ‘Breathe, Dawn, breathe.’ A doctor was pressing my chest, drips were being disconnected, everyone was rushing round. I couldn’t understand the panic, I wasn’t in pain. Then they pushed my body out of the room to the theatre. I followed my body out of the ITU and then left on what I can only describe as a journey of a lifetime.

I went down what seemed like a cylindrical tunnel with a bright warm inviting light at the end. I seemed to be traveling at quite a speed, but I as happy, no pain, just peace. At the end was a beautiful open field, a wonderful summery smell of flowers. There was a bench seat on the right where my Grandfather sat (he had been dead seven years). I sat next to him. He asked me how I was and the family. I said I was happy and content and all my family were fine.

He said he was worried about my son; my son needed his mother, he was too young to be left. I told Grampi I didn’t want to go back, I wanted to stay with him. But Grampi insisted I go back for my children’s sake. I then asked him if he would come for me when my time came. He started to answer, ‘Yes, I will be back in four –’ then my whole body seemed to jump. I looked round and saw that I was back in the ITU.

I honestly believe in what happened, that there is life after death. After my experience I am not afraid of death as I was before my illness.

Karma is Real !

Karma (the act of getting back what you give) is real and the Dalai Lama knows it. Now scientists know it too. In the May 28th edition of the Vancouver Sun, Karen Gram describes his gift of a candy bar to a young street urchin and quotes spiritualist Victor Chan as saying, “This really made his day. That really simple act of giving had a profound effect on the Dalai Lama himself and this is his life’s work.”

Psychologist Miriam Mongrain recruited volunteers on Facebook and had them fill out scientifically valid questionnaires about their emotional state. She then randomly divided them into a compassion group and a control group, and asked the compassion group to engage in acts of kindness lasting five to 15 minutes every day for seven days and to answer questions online about it every day. Gram quotes Mongrain as saying, “The effects at one week were very significant.” The results were so significant that they could not have occurred by chance.

“I was pleasantly surprised to see that people really seem to feel significantly happier when they do these compassionate acts. That to me is not a small thing. The more they did it the better they felt.” Gram quotes Mongrain as saying, “We know for a fact that the increase is real. We are not asking people to become missionaries in Africa. This is (about) small things that don’t take long.”

Reincarnation – Indigo Children

Thousands of fascinating case studies with verified facts of children who remember past lives have been documented. For example, the ‘Division of Personality Studies’ at the University of Virginia, has a database of over many thousands of researched and mostly verified cases. These children have an astoundingly exact knowledge of their past lives and prove it by recognizing localities, personal events and people they could not have known before, made up or imagined.

Reincarnation & Freewill

There is no true freewill in atheism, or Judaeo-Christian-Islamic religions. Only in Buddhism, Hindu philosophy and other brands of free-thought with the concept of reincarnation can there be true freewill. Let me ask you these simple questions:

Did you choose your gender in this lifetime?

Did you choose who your parents were going to be, did they choose you?

Did you choose what environment you were born into, what your physical characteristics are, etc.?

Unless you can answer yes to these questions you do not believe in true freewill. For there is much you did not choose of your own will.

Only in reincarnation theory can you have true free will. For the soul pre-exists life on earth and so chooses a path of development that benefits the soul most, at its given stage in evolution. Of its own freewill the soul chooses a limited framework so that it can experience a given reality within it and thereby grow. The soul chooses temporary loss of total freewill power of its own freewill.

Now this leads into one of humanities greatest mysteries and possibly one of the most difficult things to rationalize given the atheist/Judeo-Christian-Islamic framework most people are coming from. That mystery is: why are some people born sick while others healthy? Why are some people born rich while others poor? In Judaeo-Christian-Islamic religions God chooses for you, overriding your freewill. In atheism this occurs by random probability and thus overriding your possible freewill.

Now in reincarnation theory people actually choose to be born poor, sick etc. Souls choose such a path so that they can learn from the experiences. They choose such a path because it benefits their overall spiritual evolution. Without anything to overcome the soul simply would not grow. Some of the most difficult lifetimes offer the greatest potential for growth.

The general purpose of incarnating on planet earth is to learn about emotion and sexuality. That’s right earth is a SCHOOL for sexuality and emotions. This is the unique experience that earth offers in that it enables souls to learn how to use these tools in order to create. Thus you can easily see why majority of souls who incarnate on this planet do not choose to incarnate into a mansion lifestyle and sit around and eat grapes and drink wine all day. It’s through life’s challenges specifically in relation to others where human souls individually stand to gain the greatest amount of spiritual growth knowledge and wisdom.

Individual soul characteristics are also important. Why would souls pick places like Darfur, or a mentally retarded body? Well they have their reasons. The greatest adversity also provides the greatest potential for growth. Some souls are rather gung-ho, and pick really challenging lives spiritually and others prefer to take it easier. But nonetheless souls cannot grow unless they have something to overcome. And souls choose to incarnate into situations that best match their own personal stage of evolution. For everyone has their own highly personal and specialized growth pattern.

For a moment, temporarily suspend whatever beliefs you may have and attempt to figure out why YOU may have chosen the life you have right now in order to learn the things you have chosen. Remember this most likely has something to do with your emotions, ego and sexuality. See how this impacts your life knowing full well you were the ultimate chooser of virtually almost everything that has happened to you. Remember the soul’s intelligence and wisdom is far superior to that of your own current limited illusionary perceived self. The soul knows full well what it gets itself into and all possible things that may happen to it. Under such a framework it is pretty difficult to build a victim identity for yourself knowing how much you actually chose out of your own true freewill!

Breathing in Meditation

To begin meditating, sit in a comfortable position and try to be aware of the breath as it enters and leaves the body through the nostrils.  You should be able to feel it either just below the nose or somewhere around the nostrils. Do not fallow the breath into the body or out of the body, because you will not be able to perfect your concentration. Just be aware of the breath at the most obvious place it brushes against or touches either the top of the upper lip or around the nostrils. Then you will be able to develop and perfect your concentration. Do not note ‘in, out, impermanent; or ‘in, out, suffering; or ‘in, out, non-self’. Simply be aware of in and out breath as a concept.

The concept of the breath is the object of mindfulness-of-breathing. It is this subject you must concentrate on to develop concentration. As you concentrate on the concept of the breath in this way, and if you practiced this meditation in a previous life and developed some Paramis, you will be easily able to concentrate on the in-and-out breath.

If not, the Vissuddhimagga suggests counting the breaths. You should count after the end of each breath: ‘In-out-one, In-out-two,’ etc. Count up to at least five, but not more than ten.
