Magic mushrooms, international law and the failed ‘war on drugs’

It’s been a busy fortnight. First the publication of two major peer-reviewed research papers about magic mushrooms that attracted worldwide publicity. Then off to Prague for an international drugs policy symposium. And just last week, news of a large grant for our next collaborative study with Imperial College. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
I established the Beckley Foundation some 14 years ago as a think tank on drugs policy. It was apparent even then that the “war on drugs” had failed. A 1997 report by the United Nations Drugs Control Programme put the value of the global trade in illicit drugs at around $400bn. Recent UN figures show that global production of opium (used mostly to make heroin) rose by almost 80% between 1998 and 2009. The market in illicit drugs is the third largest market in the world, after food and oil.
The health statistics are equally grim. In some countries – including some within the EU – more than three-quarters of intravenous drug users are infected with hepatitis C. Worldwide, there are several million non-fatal drug overdoses each year. Drug wars themselves also claim a dreadful toll: more than 47,000 deaths in the past five years for Mexico alone, according to the latest estimates.
However, while it is clear that existing policies are crying out for reform, what is less clear is how to foster the required political will.
The Beckley Foundation is the only organisation to combine rigorous scientific research with detailed policy analysis in an attempt to address that question. Our premise is simple: drugs policies should focus on health, harm reduction and cost-effectiveness, and should be based on the best available scientific evidence. That means trying out and evaluating a variety of policy ideas, as well as researching the physical effects of drugs.
Drugs policies around the world are based on three UN conventions, dating from 1961, 1971 and 1988. The conventions allow limited production and possession of drugs, but only for scientific and therapeutic use. In particular, parties to the 1988 Convention (which include the vast majority of UN member states) are obliged to criminalise the production, distribution, sale, purchase and possession of listed drugs other than for approved scientific and medical purposes. The result is the criminalisation of millions of people guilty of nothing other than personal drug use.
Medical Marijuana Is Legal In Jersey, But M.S. Sufferer Will Still Do Time

New Jersey legalized medical marijuana last year, but Garden State resident and multiple sclerosis-sufferer John Wilson, 37, faces a five-year prison sentence for growing pot plants in his back yard. Wilson was busted back before the state legislature legalized weed for medical purposes, but despite pleading for clemency with Governor Chris Christie, Wilson will do time for “drug manufacturing.” Yesterday an appellate court panel rejected Wilson’s appeal, ruling that someone accused of manufacturing a drug cannot claim “personal use.”
Wilson’s debilitating disease affects the brain and spinal chord, and those who suffer from chronic illnesses like M.S. say that the THC in marijuana provides great relief. But during Wilson’s trial, the judge barred him from telling jurors that he was only growing the plant for his personal use, not for sale, and his lawyers were not allowed to call an expert to testify on the medical uses of marijuana. The appeals court found that the judge ruled correctly, and did not find the sentence overly harsh.

World Wide Web and Consciousness of Oneness

The internet is one of the most significant technological developments of the present time. Through the World Wide Web humanity has been given a tool for global communication and interconnectivity. Its use has become central to the lives of millions of people, businesses and organizations, linking humanity together in ways unimaginable a few decades ago. But how does it relate to the emerging consciousness of oneness? Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee gives a visionary perspective on the role of the internet, and how we are only beginning to understand its real potential.
One of the limitations of our present understanding of the Internet is that we have not fully realized the new dynamic created by the many new connections that are being made. We do not recognize that it is the connections themselves that are most important, not the information or goods that are exchanged. When these connections come alive then the Internet will wake to its real potential.
A basic awareness of life’s oneness is already being reflected into the collective consciousness. From ecologists to global corporations to Internet users, we all are becoming more aware of the interconnectedness of life, of how the individual interacts with the whole.
The Internet is a part of the development of our global awareness, which is why its ability to make connections is so important. It is a web of connections being woven within the fabric of the world, although it does not exist at a solely physical level, but on an energy level we call cyberspace. The way that the Internet has developed reflects the way the oneness can work exponentially, without being constricted by past patterns of development.
Twitter, Consciousness and Oneness

“I see Twitter as a collective consciousness, or a personal Google. When you ask Google a question it tells you where to go to find the answer. When you ask twitter a question you get a personal response from a human.”
“Think about the slight but powerful shift here – to appear in Google a person has to write their content on a webpage, but to appear on Twitter search all you have to do is have a conversation. People don’t need to be publishers to contribute to this latent knowledge sink, all they have to do is talk to their friends and post their status and the tools will do the rest.” Ross Hill, Blogger said.
I think one of the most significant contributions Twitter is bringing to the evolution of Connected Consciousness (for lack of a better term – the new collective or common consciousness created by the mass connection of humans to the network.) For the first time in the history of our species, it is possible to massively communicate with massive numbers of human beings about pretty much anything. We are starting to realize the power of connecting human beings; well, we’ve always known that there is strength in numbers, but there’s magic in the network!
Twitter helps human beings feel the Unity and Oneness over Internet more than ever before. Distances don’t matter anymore.
Those of us who understand the Oneness Blessing and the impartation of the Spirit of Wholeness or Holy Spirit must be strong, honest, and even creative as we share our information, gifts and talents in ways which promote oneness. For as long as we see ourselves as separate from the ONE, we will always see ourselves separate from ALL-that-is.
Global Consciousness of Internet (the electronic man brain)

As Dean Radin said “In the case of Global Consciousness, if you take the purely materialistic point of view in an order to get the level of awareness we have, you will need approximately over 10 billion units like little computers that there are richly interconnected to become self aware.
If that’s what it takes for a system to become self aware like the brain, are we approaching it with internet? The answer is yes and the electronic man brain becomes aware by its own rights.
There is no reason for it not to happen in a purely materialistic point of view.”
According to Twitter from 8 million reported 12 months ago, the new stats put users registered with Twitter at over 105 million (105,770,710 to be exact).
Twitter attracts 180 million unique visitors per month and there are over 600 million search queries on Twitter per day.
That’s what I like to call Twisdom, reliable information stays up as people want them and react to them and un-reliable goes down very fast.
We’ve got a long way to 10 billion computers which they’re interconnected but total tweets in 2009 grew some 1,400%. Traffic to Twitter.com grew around 1,100%, and total sent Tweets went up 1,400%.
Then it’s not impossible to happen in near future if you think about it.
Internet & Psychedelics

Drugs & the Internet are inextricably and symbiotically entwined. Indeed, the very origins of the Internet are bound up with the exuberant experimentation with psychedelic drugs that took place in Silicon Valley from the 1960s onwards. The use of both psychedelic drugs and the Internet can be conceptualized as attempts to augment human capacity, as technologies through which minds can be opened and society reformed.
As testament to the significance of psychedelic drug use amongst many of the Silicon Valley pioneers, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computers, maintains that taking LSD was one of the two or three most important things he has ever done. Jobs is far from being alone in attesting that LSD can help human thought processing, particularly in tackling the challenges of computing: ‘Experienced and intelligent trippers are often characterized by a fluid sense of perception, and a sensitivity to … “The pattern that connects” – just the kind of mental gymnastics that come in handy when you’re crafting the giddy complexities of information space’ (Davis, 1998: 170). The Internet is a system with the hippies’ fingerprints all over it, with the psychedelicized counterculture’s scorn for centralized authority providing the philosophical foundations of the leaderless Internet.

Our story begins in the warm country of Brazil, home to soccer, paradise beaches and of course, lots of music and beautiful women.
Brazil is also the psy trance capital of South America, and is considered one of the world’s hot spots of electronic music.
This is due to the sound’s popularity, its large scale parties and the high level of coverage that the psy trance scene receives.
Psy trance has expanded throughout Brazil and all the major cities contribute on some level – Sao Paulo, Curitiba, Belo Horizonte and Brasilia all boast happening trance parties.
There are also lots of festivals and events including the famous Earthdance, XXXperience, Universo Paralello, Tribe, Solaris, Tranceformation, Trancendance, Green Rabbit, Fora do Tempo, Cachoeira Alta and many others.
