A drug derived from magic mushrooms could help people with depression by enabling them to relive positive and happy moments of their lives, according to scientists including the former government drug adviser, Professor David Nutt.

Two studies, for which scientists struggled to find funding because of public suspicion and political sensitivity around psychedelic drugs, have shed light on how magic mushrooms affect the brain.

Nutt, from Imperial College London, was sacked as a government drug adviser after claiming tobacco and alcohol were more dangerous than cannabis and psychedelic drugs such as ecstasy and LSD.

He believes prejudice and fear have prevented important scientific work on psychedelic drugs. Research began in the 1950s and 60s but was stopped by the criminalisation of drugs and stringent regulations which made the work costly.

“Everybody who has taken psychedelics makes the point that these can produce the most profound changes in the state of awareness and being that any of them have experienced,” said Nutt.

The drugs had been used for millennia, he said, since psychedelic mushrooms grew in the Elysian fields of Greece. Aldous Huxley wrote The Doors Of Perception about the insight such drugs gave him into the life of the mind.

• “Classic” trance. While this isn’t a specifically defined subgenre, this refers to early trance that began in the late 80s. This subgenre has a tremendous focus on repetition, slowly changing over the course of the song. Classic trance can be said to be ported from contemporary classical music’s “minimalism” developed by contemporary composers such as Steve Reich, Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Philip Glass.
• Acid trance. Acid trance is mostly similar to classic trance, except that it has a much more hypnotic and “trippy” feel to it. It has a unique sound that is often achieved by playing with filters, pans, and oscillators to create a “science fiction”-esque sound. See Roland TB-303.
• Progressive trance. This subgenre defined the popular “build-up and breakdown” themes that are often associated with trance. By slowly building up a progression of melodies and creating a pseudo “tension”, an outburst of emotional bliss results at the peak of the melody as it “releases”. These releases are often done by creating a brief lull in the melody before quickly returning to the main theme. Other common techniques include pausing, using rests, rapidly speeding up the BPM, and using progressing kicks from quarter- to eighth- to sixteenth-, note kicks, and so on.
• Goa trance. This subgenre shares many of the characteristics of acid trance, but has a unique “organic” sound to it. Goa trance is such a complex and structured subgenre of trance that many other “sub”-subgenres originated from goa trance, itself.
• Psychedelic trance. Also known as psytrance, this subgenre is very similar to goa. In what goa trance creates for an organic feel, psytrance creates an electronic, futuristic feel. Psytrance tends to use more sci-fi ambient sounds together with the techniques used in acid trance.
• Ambient trance. This subgenre tends to use a much slower BPM and places less emphasis on the quarter-note kick. Many ambient artists do away with the quarter-note measure altogether and drop to half-note measures or other measures. Ambient trance generally uses softer sounds and maintains an “easy listening” feel, while still retaining the repetitive and emotional characteristics associated with trance.
• Tech-trance. Tech-trance is a fusion between techno and trance. It is very tough. It doesn’t focus on a melody, at times a melody will be used in the breakdown. Usually focuses around the talent to manipulate one note and edit it to make a very industrial sounding synth. Some names to check out who specialize in tech-trance are Sander van Doorn, Abel Ramos, Bryan Kearney, Randy Katana, and Marcel Woods.

Cosmic consciousness is the idea that the universe exists as an interconnected network of consciousness, with each conscious being linked to every other. Sometimes this is conceived as forming a collective consciousness which spans the cosmos, othertimes it is conceived of as an Absolute or Godhead from which all conscious beings emanate.

Throughout history, there have been many renditions of universal unity, connectivity, and the spectrum of considered possibility of mankind. The idea bears similarity to the ancient Buddhist concept of Indra’s net, Teilhard de Chardin’s conception of the noosphere, Hegel’s Absolute idealism, Satori in Zen and to some traditional pantheist beliefs.

Many of those who have used psychedelics such as LSD and Psilocybin mushrooms have asserted that they have had direct experience of the cosmic consciousness. In the 19th century, Canadian psychiatrist Richard M. Bucke developed a theory which claimed that cosmic consciousness lies in a mystic state above and beyond self-consciousness, the natural state of man’s consciousness, just like animal consciousness lies below.

Quantum Physics also helped us to understand this universal unity by Entanglement concept which state the particles that interact physically and then become separated, will stay connected regardless of their distance.

According to Hindu scriptures, all mortal beings are destined to pass through four great epochs in every cycle of creation and destruction. This divine cycle turns full-circle at the end of what is known as kalpa. A kalpa is a yuga cycle, which is a period of 10,000 divine years, and is divided into four ages or yugas (Sanskrit yuga = age/epoch). According to one calculation, one yuga cycle is estimated to be 4,320,000 years, and one kalpa 4,320,000,000 years.

About the 4 Yugas

The four great epochs in Hinduism are: Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapar Yuga and Kali Yuga. Satya Yug or the Age of Truth is said to last for four thousand divine years, Treta Yuga for three thousand, Dwapara Yug for two thousand and Kali Yuga will last for one thousand divine Years that equals to 432,000 earthly years.

It is also believed that three of these great ages have already passed away, and we are now living in the fourth one. We live in the Kali Yuga — in a world infested with impurities and vices. People possessing genial virtues are diminishing day by day. Floods and famine, war and crime, deceit and duplicity characterize this age. But, say the scriptures, final emancipation is possible only in this age. Kali Yuga will end at 21 December 2012 and we will move to Satya Yuga, the Age of Truth.

The four ages symbolize the four phases of involution during which man gradually lost the awareness of his inner selves and subtle bodies. Hinduism believes that human beings have five kinds of bodies, called annamayakosa, pranamayakosa, manomayakosa vignanamayakosa and anandamayakosa, which represent the ‘gross body’, the ‘breath body’, the ‘psychic body’, the ‘intelligence body’ and the ‘bliss body’ respectively.

Another theory explains these epochs of time on the basis of the degree of loss of righteousness in the world. It says, during Satya Yuga only truth prevailed (Sanskrit Satya = truth), Treta lost ¼ truth, Dwapar lost ½ truth and Kali is left with only ¼ truth. Evil and dishonesty has replaced truth in the last three ages or yugas.

Shamanic trance dance music is intended to induce a trance-like state of mind in the listener or dancer. Shamanic traditions have, for a long time, used drums and drum rhythms to achieve and enhance such a trance-like state. Constant drum rhythms, as used in shamanic trance music, have a direct effect upon the brain function and mood of the involved listener, and this can allow a shaman to reach an altered state of mind. This, in turn, can facilitate a shamanic out-of-body experience.

• Establish a steady pulse. Like a heartbeat, trance music has a steady pulse which does not slow down or speed up. Play the drum (with your hands or with drum sticks), in a steady, unchanging pulse like a regular heartbeat or walking rhythm.
• Add subdivisions of the beat. For each pulse-note, you can play two, three, or four equal beats. Vary these rhythmic subdivisions to create rhythmic interest and new patterns.
• Repeat your beat patterns several times. Trance music works on repetition, so keep an individual rhythmic pattern going for some considerable time before moving on to a new or different pattern. The underlying pulse of the music stays the same throughout.
• Use dynamics (getting louder or quieter) to change the mood of the drumming trance music. This in turn will affect the mood of the shaman or listener.
