Shiva the Destroyer and Kali the dark Goddess

The psychedelic trance culture has generally its roots in the Indian province of Goa, where the Pioneer Goa Gil redefined the ancient tribal ritual for the 21st century. Goa Gil has a deep background in the Hindu Religion and the highest spiritual order of the Naga Babas, the holy naked men covered in ashes from the sacred fire, smoking chillum and worshipping Shiva. Shiva is the destroyer of the world – his Nataraj dance represents both the destruction and the creation of the universe and reveals the cycles of death, birth and rebirth. Shiva has often been depicted on the covers of trance albums or on the decorations of the trance gatherings.

The symbolic dance of Shiva has always been an important subject in the trance culture, which is a fact that makes this culture quite connected to a symbolic destruction dance act since its very beginning. In the Hindu Religion Shiva is referred to as a God of Ultimate Light but the psy trance culture misinterpreted that and emphasized mainly on his symbolic dance of destruction. In this way the psy trance culture actually emphasized mainly on the dark side in its concepts regarding Hinduism, even before the sub style dark psy appeared out of the classical psychedelic trance after the new millennium.

Even if dark psychedelic is ridiculously being ignored by its roots as a negatively loaded demonic concept, it is actually the very essence of the trance culture at all.

The philosophical aspect of using the dark side as a passage to the light is also very obvious with the symbolism of the dark Goddess Kali, a goddess walking with skulls of dead men and killing the ignorance. Kali is a ferocious form of the Divine Mother, who appears to free the gods from the dominion of the demonic forces. Kali creates fear in the ignorant souls and she also removes the ignorance that makes us fear death. The concept of using the dark side as a way to remove the fear of death has been developed in a modern context by some dark psychedelic artists who emphasize on the importance to face and respect death.
